Terms of Use
Effective 4 October 2026
These terms apply to the Synthesis apps for Mac, iPad and iPhone and to the Synthesis service
(api.synthesis.map-territory.net) that the apps use. By using Synthesis you agree to them. How we handle personal
data is described separately in the Privacy Notice.
Synthesis is made by Map + Territory, The Hague, the Netherlands, registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK) under 89412869 (“we”, “us”).
1. What Synthesis Is
Synthesis is a music player for your Plex library, with Apple Music alongside. The Synthesis service adds information about the music: credits, artist biographies, album notes, related music and recommendations.
Synthesis is in beta. Features change, some are unfinished and the service may be slow, incomplete or unavailable at times. Synthesis is currently free. If we ever charge for the app or for features, you’ll buy them through the App Store under Apple’s terms, and we’ll tell you before anything costs money.
2. Your License
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Synthesis apps on Apple devices you own or control, and to use the Synthesis service through those apps, for your own non-commercial use.
If you got Synthesis from the App Store or TestFlight, Apple’s terms for apps (the Licensed Application End User License Agreement) apply too. These terms add to them; Apple isn’t a party to these terms and isn’t responsible for Synthesis.
You may not copy, sell or redistribute the apps, or reverse engineer them except where the law allows it.
3. Using the Service Fairly
The Synthesis service is there for the Synthesis apps. You agree not to:
- call the service from anything other than an unmodified Synthesis app, or get around App Attest or other checks that tell genuine installations apart;
- scrape, crawl or bulk-download the service, or use it to build a copy of its data or a competing service;
- exceed or work around its rate limits, or send requests in a way that harms the service or other users;
- probe, attack or disrupt the service, or try to reach data that isn’t yours;
- use Synthesis to break the law or anyone’s rights.
We may limit, suspend or block access that breaks these rules or puts the service at risk.
4. Plex, Apple Music and Other Services
Synthesis works with services run by others: Plex (your Plex account and Plex Media Server), Apple Music, iCloud and the App Store. Their own terms and privacy policies apply when you use them through Synthesis, and you need your own account and, where needed, subscription with each.
Synthesis is an independent app. It isn’t affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Plex, Inc. or Apple Inc. Plex is a trademark of Plex, Inc. Apple Music, iCloud, Mac, iPad and iPhone are trademarks of Apple Inc.
We aren’t responsible for these services: if one changes, limits access or stops working, parts of Synthesis may stop working with it.
5. Your Music and Your Server
You are responsible for your Plex server, your media and your accounts: that you have the right to the music you play, that your server is set up and kept secure the way you want, and that you keep your sign-in details to yourself. Synthesis plays what your server and Apple Music provide; it doesn’t give you rights to any music.
6. Information, Images and Attributions
The information Synthesis shows comes from public sources and from us:
- MusicBrainz and Wikidata facts are in the public domain (CC0). Genres and styles also come from Discogs data dumps (CC0) and ListenBrainz data.
- Album notes and artist biographies are written by an AI model from those facts. From some versions on, the model also reads the subject’s Wikipedia article; texts written from an article are adaptations licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, and the app shows the article they’re based on.
- Images come from the Cover Art Archive, Wikimedia Commons and fanart.tv. They belong to their creators and rights holders; the app shows each image’s source and, where one applies, its license and author.
Texts written by the model can contain mistakes. They are there to help you find and enjoy music, not as a reference you should rely on. If you see something wrong, tell us.
Everything else in Synthesis, including the apps, their design and the texts we write ourselves, belongs to us or our licensors.
7. Feedback
If you send us feedback or suggestions, we may use them to improve Synthesis without owing you anything for it.
8. No Warranty During the Beta
Synthesis is provided “as is” and “as available”. As far as the law allows, we don’t promise that it will be free of errors, always available or suited to a particular purpose, or that its information is complete or correct. This doesn’t limit the rights consumers have by law, such as the legal guarantee where it applies.
9. Liability
As far as the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect or consequential loss, for loss of data or for damage caused by services we don’t run (such as Plex or Apple Music).
These limits don’t apply to damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence, to death or personal injury, or anywhere else the law doesn’t allow liability to be limited. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have as a consumer under the law of the country where you live.
10. Ending Use
You can stop using Synthesis at any time: delete your data with Delete Your Data in Settings and remove the app.
We may stop offering Synthesis or the service, or end your access if you break these terms. If we close the service, we’ll say so in advance where we can, and we’ll delete the personal data it holds as described in the Privacy Notice. Sections 6, 8, 9 and 12 continue to apply after use ends.
11. Changes to These Terms
We may change these terms, for example when Synthesis gains features. We publish the new version here with a new effective date and, for changes that matter to you, tell you in the app before they take effect. If you don’t agree with a change, you can stop using Synthesis.
12. Law and Disputes
These terms are governed by Dutch law. As a consumer you keep the protection of the mandatory law of the country where you live. Disputes go to the court that has jurisdiction under the law; these terms don’t take away your right as a consumer to go to the courts where you live, where the law gives you that right.
If part of these terms isn’t valid, the rest still applies.
